How To Submit URL To Google – Step by Step Tutorial [2020]

After creating an article the next task is to submit URL to Google so that search engine crawlers can index our article and add to their database. We need to submit the URL to various search engines to get the highest index and publication. Since Google is the most popular search engine that’s why in this example we will submit our URL to Google using the webmaster tool.

Before going to submit the article URL on Google, make sure you have completed the writing and designing part of the page. If you have not completed yet, it should be completed before submission and optimize the images as well. After crafting part of the page is finished you are ready to submit the URL to Google.

Why Should You Submit URL to Google?

The simplest way to submit your new and updated URLs is to register your site and app with Search Console.

– Google

We submit URL to Google for getting indexed by Google bot that has written inside the pages. Once Google’s crawler bot identifies the page it will also scan for content inside it. After scanning your page Googlebot will send the information to Google’s search database.

Once the page information arrives in the Google database it becomes discoverable by the user’s search queries. So this is a very important task to submit URL to Google search engine.

Remember that if you do not submit your site to search console it will take more time to get indexed (depends on your sitemap indexing by Google). So submission just after crafting your page is a very good practice that makes your page indexing quick and efficient.

Where to submit the page URL?

To submit and verify your page URL with Google you have to use the webmaster tool. Webmaster tool is developed by Google specifically for the website owners. This acts as a gateway to submit your page or site to Google’s search engine.

Quick Note: The webmaster tool has two different versions. Google had introduced the new version of search console (webmaster tool) back in January 2018. However, you can still access the older version in case you prefer it more.

To access the webmaster tool you will need a Google account. Normally we all have our account on Google. But if you want to create a specific one then apply here.

Key Point: Connecting your Analytics account to the webmaster is a good habit. So try to use the same Google account for both the tools.

Now before submitting an individual page to Google follow this tutorial to assign your new website to the webmaster tool.

Steps To Verify Your Website (Webmaster New Version)

Visit the webmaster tool and click on the search console.

After submission, the tool will automatically scan the availability of your submitted domain. Once it finds the domain will provide five options to verify that the domain is yours.

  1. HTML file
  2. HTML tag
  3. Google analytics
  4. Google Tag Manager
  5. Domain name provider

To verify the site, you have to follow one of the given methods. Here we will go through the first two processes of URL verification. The first two methods are used mostly by users.

1. HTML file upload

The webmaster tool will generate an HTML file. You have to download and upload it back to your Domain /root folder.

First, download the file recommended by the webmaster tool.

Now go to your web host and open the cPanel file manager. (If you have FTP clients then you can use it as an alternative).

  • Go to your domain name (File directory)
  • The file should be uploaded on the ROOT directory means https://your-domain.com/(Upload-in-this-directory)

  • When uploading is done, come back to the webmaster and click on verify.
  • Google will look for the file on your website automatically. When it finds the HTML file inside your domain, your domain name will be verified.
  • If verification is not completed, you can try once more with the correct procedure.
  • Or you can use the HTML tag method alternately.

2. HTML tag verification

HTML tags are meta tags composed in HTML code with numbers and characters string. Webmaster tool will provide you a unique HTML tag that you must paste inside your site’s <head> section. There are various ways to insert that HTML tag inside the heading section.

All three plugins do the same work and all three plugins provide a very easy option to complete this work. Let’s see how to verify your site with Yoast and Rankmath plugin.

2.1. Yoast’s method of verification

Install the Yoast SEO plugin in your WordPress. Go to SEO from the WP dashboard > General > Webmaster Tool.

Now like the previous part, go to Google webmaster tool and verify the website. Once the verification process is done, you can access the webmaster tool dashboard. The next step is to submit your sitemap into the webmaster tool.

Submit Sitemap To Google

Having an XML sitemap is crucial for SEO. Google can recover a major update of a website from the sitemap. The sitemaps are updated automatically when you add or update any content inside your website. This will also include the post types that you want the search engines to index.

To generate a sitemap for your website, you can use any one of the mentioned plugins below.

  • If you have Yoast plugin installed then your sitemap address should be
    • https://your-domain.com/sitemap_index.xml
  • If you have Rank-Math plugin installed then your sitemap address should be
    • https://your-domain.com/sitemap_index.xml
  • If you have Google XML sitemap plugin installed then your sitemap address should be
    • https://your-domain.com/sitemap.xml

After confirming your sitemap address, it’s time to submit URL to Google(sitemap) for indexing. To submit the URL to Google, go to your webmaster dashboard and click on the sitemap.

Now complete the sitemap URL (inside the blank box of webmaster tool) after your domain name and click on submit. On successful submission, you will get an instant message about it.

  1. Copy the URL of page or post which is recently published.
  2. Go to the search console and paste the URL inside the inspect bar.
  3. Wait till the inspecting process is finished.
  4. Since the page/post is published a few minutes ago, it will be available but not live on Google.
  5. Below the URL status, there is an option for “request indexing”.
  6. Find that and click on request indexing.
  7. Once requested Google will show you a message that they will look for the requested URL soon.
  8. Wait for at least 30 minutes and your page/post will be live on Google.
